Going Coastal (6195) - a photo on Flickriver

            I recently moved to the Hilton Head Island area of South Carolina (Latitude Margaritaville Hilton Head in Hardeeville). I wanted to shoot a photo for the wall in my new home studio. Thought these colorful shells would help offer a bright way to encourage me to get out & start working on some beach groupings as well as explore the entire area!

Most of my studio equipment is still packed away, so I had to improvise on the shot. I used a $.50 (0.43 €) piece of white poster board to set the shells on, placing them at waist level on some stacked boxes in the garage, against an old white refrigerator (used as the background). I used two speed lights for my lighting, set @ about 45 degrees on either side (@ 1/32 power), sitting them on garbage cans to elevate them slightly. Using a sheet of coral/salmon colored tissue paper, I taped it about 12 inches above the shells onto the refrigerator, so the flash from the speed lights would pick up some color. I did use a tripod for the camera in order to set-up the shot properly.

 It took a number of shots to get the lighting right, before I finally end up with this image. The photo was adjusted slightly in Light Room for saturation and I added a subtle light vignette on the outside to keep the overall feel, light & bright. When you have to plan a little more and think creatively on how to set things up to overcome not having the things you are used to, seeing a nice final image makes it all worth it. Now I look forward to having this printed out & hung up for inspiration!
