L2024_0180 DE WADDEN - scrapping begins

DE WADDEN has been a feature of the Merseyside Maritime Museum for 40 years since being acquired in 1984 only a few years after the museum was established.

For much of that time she has rested in Canning Graving Dock. In her early days she had an active working group who started to restore her.

Unfortunately the group was dispanded many years ago along with the Friends of the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Thus for the past 20 years DE WADDEN has slowly rotted.

National Museums Liverpool decided to scrap her in 2023 if nobody would take her on.

From more recent info released she appeared to be in a bad way with her keel broken.

Apparently the proposal once she is gone is to create a Mausoleum type building in the bottom of the dock as a "Contemplation Space" of all things!

This isn't the first historic ship in the care of the Maritime Museum to be broken up. Some years ago the River Weaver cargoship which was in full working order was scrapped.

Yet National Museums seems to find large amounts of money for other projects.
