Fort Vancouver Apple Tree 2226 D - a photo on Flickriver

            Fort Vancouver was first established in the 1820s by the British Hudson Bay Company and was important to the settlement of the Pacific Northwest.  Many famous 19th century military figures, including Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, Nelson Miles and George Crook were stationed here.

The oldest apple tree in the Pacific Northwest grew near this orchard for over 190 years and died just this summer.

In 1826, the seed for the tree started its journey to America from England in the pocket of Lieutenant Simpson of the Royal Navy.   He was attending a formal dinner party before departing for the Pacific Northwest, when a young woman took seeds from her apple desert, tucked them into his pocket and told him to plant them when he arrived in the New World.

The apple tree was located along a favorite walking path in Vancouver and was celebrated each September with a festival.

A sketch of the fort grounds from the 1840s shows there was an orchard near the spot where I took this photo, but I doubt the tree in this photo is from the original orchard.
