Temple of Kom Ombo #4 - a photo on Flickriver

            Our Nile cruise visited this Egyptian temple after dark but it was well lighted.

The Temple of Kom Ombo is an unusual double temple in the town of Kom Ombo north of Aswan in Upper Egypt. It was constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty, 180–47 BC. Some additions to it were later made during the Roman period.

The building is unique because its "double" design which includes  duplicate courts, halls, sanctuaries and rooms for two sets of gods. The southern half of the temple was dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, god of fertility. The northern part of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Horus. The temple is unique due to being symmetrical along the main axis.

Figures including Sobek (left) and Horus (center) have been removed by either conquerors or those who saw the images as pagan.
