Peveril Castle - Outer Wall with Buttress

Although there had been a castle on the peak since 1068, the present keep was erected in 1156 on the orders of Henry ii. The castle gave it's name to Castleton, Derbyshire, the small town lying at the foot of Castle Peak.Note the "English" doorways and openings. There were other extensive buildings in the complex now long since gone. The ruin gave the title to Sir Walter Scott's novel 'Peveril of the Peak'. William Peveril was the illegitimate son of William i (the conqueror), first Norman king of England.
