Freight on cog - Fret sur crémaillère

            Le train de marchandises Viège (Visp) - Zermatt G4231 remonte la vallée de la Viège (Vispa), agrippé à  sa crémaillère (de type Abt), à proximité de Randa. La rampe atteint 120 ‰, c’est-à-dire que le train gagne 120 mètres d’altitude par kilomètre de voie. 

Il est remorqué par la HGe4/4 II n°108 construite en 1990.

Un train de fret en montagne, en forte rampe, sur voie étroite, et à crémaillère : c’est un transport quotidien (en semaine), en Suisse. Et bien entendu, la traction est électrique. Si on y réfléchit bien, c’est tout à fait incroyable, du point de vue technique et économique. La Suisse est  l’un des rares pays au monde à faire ça (peut-être le seul ?). A Zermatt, la circulation automobile est interdite et celle des autres véhicules routiers restreinte.

The G4231 Visp - Zermatt freight train travels up the Vispa valley, clinging to its rack (of the Abt type), near Randa. The gradient reaches 120 ‰, i.e. the train gains 120 meters in altitude per kilometer of track. 

It is hauled by HGe4/4 II no. 108, built in 1990.

A mountain freight train, on a steep gradient, narrow gauge and cog : this is daily transportation (on weekdays) in Switzerland. And, of course, the traction is electric. If you think about it, it's quite incredible, both technically and economically. Switzerland is one of the few countries in the world to do this (perhaps the only one?). In Zermatt, car traffic is banned, and other road vehicles are restricted.
