            Benarés (en hindi: बनारस i en urdú: بنارس, Banāras), també coneguda com a Varanasi (en sànscrit: वाराणसी Vārāṇasī) o Kashi (en hindi: काशी i en urdú: کاشی) és una ciutat i municipalitat de l'Índia a la riba del Ganges, a l'estat d'Uttar Pradesh, capital de la divisió de Varanasi, del districte de Varanasi i del tehsil de Varanasi. És ciutat sagrada de la regió hindú, i també sagrada per jainistes i sintoistes. És una de les ciutats habitades contínuament més antigues del món. El maharajà de Benarés, o Kashi Naresh, és el cap cultural i patró de les cerimònies religioses.

Varanasi (Hindustani pronunciation: [ʋaːˈraːɳəsi] ( listen)), also Benares, Banaras (Banāras [bəˈnaːrəs] ( listen)) or Kashi (Kāśī [ˈkaːʃi] ( listen)), is a city on the banks of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow. It is holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism. Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the oldest in India.
