The Stone Pines of Palatine Hill - Pinus Pinea

For me, the Stone Pine is as much a dominant feature of Rome as the historic architecture. In this image, which was taken from inside the Colosseum, palatine hill and some of its many stone pines are shown.

“The stone pine, botanical name Pinus pinea, also known as the Italian stone pine, umbrella pine and parasol pine, is a tree from the pine family (Pinaceae). In Italy, the stone pine has been an important aesthetic landscape element since the Italian Renaissance garden period. The tree is among the symbols of Rome, where many historic Roman roads, such as the Via Appia, are embellished with lines of stone pines.” (1)

It was also believed to be the location of the Lupercal (the cave where Romulus and Remus were found by the she-wolf).
