Dunnottar Castle at Sunrise - a photo on Flickriver

            This is the ruin of Dunnottar Castle taken just after sunrise.  The Castle is on the east coast of Scotland just south of Stonehaven.

The castle is probably most famous for the small garrison that held out against the might of Cromwell’s army for eight months and saved the Scottish Crown Jewels, the ‘Honours of Scotland’, from destruction.  You can see how they achieved this as it is built atop the cliffs on three sides and there is a very narrow entrance path on the fourth.

The Scottish Crown Jewels (crown, sceptre and sword) now take pride of place in Edinburgh Castle.
