The River Bowden - a photo on Flickriver

The River Bowden

            That V-shaped channel (4 metres high) is the reason why the crag of Bowden Doors in Northumberland is an SSSI. There are only two other places in the world (Australia & Kentucky) where such a feature has been found. By a happy coincidence the crag, 450m long, follows the flow of water down the ancient river channel and in this picture it flowed from left to right. So what is that V-shaped channel which is at right angles to the flow? The answer is that no one has come up with an explanation. The cogniscenti will also admire the lovely deformed foresets in the cross bedding which the channel has cut through.

 The white bits are chalk marks from climbers on the famous boulder problem "Vienna".
