This is at my son and daughter-in-law's new house, well new for them but about 20 years old.  The front garden was a prize winning garden up to about 10-12 years ago when the first owner sold.  

The next people in were not into gardening and all the flower beds were replaced with white gravel, but they retained a small vegetable patch that was thoroughly overgrown. 

I spent several hours last week weeding it and removing the rubbish buried in it (16 bricks, plastic bags, metal bars etc), before covering it over (apart from the two inlet paths) with a layer of fallen leaves (from our big clean up over the weekend of the front yard), and then 15 sacks and four buckets of my un-sieved compost that I brought from my place in four trips.

Once it was raked over I started spreading a layer of pea straw over it.  Hopefully it will be in a far better condition come the end of winter than it was a week ago!
