Lonely swan - a photo on Flickriver

Lonely swan

            During a short break from feeding on marine grasses among the lily pads in the Regnitz River. This male had a mate last year, and they raised two cygnets to maturity. I still have photos of them in this photostream. They did not have any offspring this year. He was injured during the winter, and returned here with a lame leg that may keep him from walking on land and apparently kept him from impregnating his mate. I saw her a few times in the spring, but then she left him. The lifetime partnership that swans are reported to observe apparently has a loophole clause. Propagating the species is more important, it seems, than partner loyalty at all costs. I was talking to him here, and he seemed to be listening. [DSC02304-2_lr_2000]
