Cerro Elefante y Trinidad al atardecer - Valle de Cochamo(Patagonia Chile)

            El Valle de Cochamo por mas de 100 años fue una huella recorrida por arrieros patagones trasladando ganado provenientes de zonas fronterizas con Argentina. En 1940 hubo un intento de colonizacion, los nuevos habitantes incendiarion la densa "Selva Valdiviana" para abrir pampas aptas para el ganado, pero las abundantes lluvias inevitablemene apagaban el fuego una y otra vez. Agotados por el aislamiento y el inclemente clima dejaron sus casas mudandose al recien fundado pueblo de Cochamo a orillas del estuario de Reloncavi. De aquel intento es posible encontrar hoy dos o tres casas abandonadas que son utilizadas como refugios por los aventureros que se adentran en el valle. El valle esta cubierto en un 25% por bosques de Alerce de mas de 3.000 años, el resto es una formidable variedad de especies nativas que han crecido por siglos formando bosques gigantes con densa vegentacion, lo que atrajo interesados en su explotacion pero debido a la falta de caminos la explotacion maderera tambien fue muy dificultosa.

En decadas recientes existio la idea de construir una carretera binacionacional para unir con Argentina posibilitando el paso de turistas desde las provicias de Chubut y Rion Negro que fue desechada por su inviabilidad logistica y la oposicion de los defensores del valle. Tambien desperto el interes y codicia de empresas hidroelectricas que pretendieron construir aqui 7 represas. Debido a esto se formo un agrupacion de residentes y aficionados a la escalada en una ONG "Conservacion Cochamo" que con la ayuda de abogados evito la construccion de la carretara y ademas consiguio que los 7 rios fuesen protegidos por "Decreto Presidencial". Asi el valle ha logrado permanecer en estado casi salvaje deshabitado y con dificil acceso.

En 1996 un estadounidense John Foss recorrio el Rio Cohamo en kayak y mostro sus fotografias a un par de compatriotas escaladores, quedaron sorprendidos por las enormes paredes de granito que se veian de telon de fondo. Junto a un ingles crearon el primer trazado de un sendero que llevaria hasta los pies del cerro Trinidad frente al Rio La Junta. Eso fue el comienzo de todo y asi "La Junta" se convitio en el epicentro de todo el valle, alli un escalador nortemaricano Daniel Seeliger y un empresario turistico chileno Rodrigo Condeza han desarrollado un camping y un lodge para recibir a turistas la mayoria deportistas escaladadores de todo el mundo que peregrinan cada año para intentar escalar sus paredes de granito o sencillamente abrir nuevas rutas en paredes de roca que pueden llegar a alcanzar los 1200 mts, solo para expertos. En lo ultimos 11 años la llegada de deportistas, aficionados al trekking, mochileros y curiosos ha ido creciendo a ritmo acelerado por lo que se cree que la entrada al valle en el futuro seria restringida a un numero fijo de turistas por año, ademas se espera que esta area pronto sea declarada Parque Nacional.

The Cochamo Valley for over 100 years was a trail for Patagonian drovers moving cattle from border areas with Argentina. In 1940 there was an attempt of colonization, the new inhabitants burning the dense "Valdivian Rainforest" to open grasslands suitable for livestock, but heavy rains extinguished the fire again and again. Exhausted by the isolation and inclemnent weather left their homes to moving to the newly founded village of Cochamo on the stuary of Reloncaví. As it is possible to find two or three of those abandoned houses used now as shelters for the adventurers walking into the valley deepness. The area is covered by 25% for Alerces forests of over 3,000 years old along a tremendous variety of native species that have grown for centuries forming giant forests full filled of dense vegentacion attracting interest in wood exploitation because of the lack of roads made this purpose fail.

In recent decades there was plans for build a road to link with Argentina allowing the passage of tourists from Chubut and Rio Negro which had dismissed its logistic infeasibility and opposition from the defenders of the valley. Also aroused the interest and greed of companies that sought to build hydroelectric seven dams here. Because of this a grouping was formed by residents and climbers in an NGO "Conservation Cochamo" with the help of lawyers avoid the construction of roads and also got the seven rivers were protected by "PD". So the valley has remain almost wild uninhabited and difficult access.

In 1996 an American John Foss crossed the Rio Cohamo kayaking and showed his photographs to a couple of fellow climbers, were surprised by the huge granite walls they looked a backdrop. Next to an English created the first tracing path that would lead to the foot of the hill Trinidad next to Rio La Junta. That was the beginning of everything as it "La Junta" become the epicenter of the valley, there anothe amercian climber Daniel Seeliger and Chilean tourism entrepreneur Rodrigo Condeza have developed a campground and a lodge for tourists most athletes climbers from around the world make pilgrimages every year to try to scale or opening new routes along the rock walls it can reach up to 1200 meters high, only for experts. In the last 11 years the increasing arrival of athletes, trekking enthusiasts, backpackers and curious has a quick grown up so it is believed that the entrance to the valley in the future would be restricted to a fixed number of tourists per year, is also expected that this area will soon be declared a national park.
