Slaty Skimmer Teneral Male - a photo on Flickriver

            This teneral male Slaty Skimmer (Libellula incesta) was perched on a tree trunk at Singletary Lake State Park, Bladen County, NC.  The term 'teneral' refers to recently emerged adults that may still be in the process of expanding their body and wings, hardening body parts, and developing the immature coloration. The wings are usually perfect and sparkling and a real treat to see at this stage.  

Immature king skimmers can be confusing, but the dark face, short 'ears' on the thoracic wolf's head pattern, and narrowing pigmented patch in the suture behind the wolf's head lead me to ID this as a Slaty Skimmer. The male secondary genitalia (just behind the thorax, beneath abdominal segment 2 ) show up well in this view, making sex determination easy.
