Senator William Andrews Clark House - a photo on Flickriver

At the New York Botanical Garden's Holiday Train Show.

Senator Clark was quite a character. Although a northerner, he joined the Confederate Army during the Civil War, only to skip out to Montana to take up copper mining. Later he founded Las Vegas as a stop on his Los Angeles and Salt Lake City Railroad.

Clark was elected senator in 1899, but did not serve when it was found out he bribed a third of Montana's state legislature. He was then appointed to fill the vacancy caused by his resignation! He was finally mostly legitimately elected in 1901 and served one term.

His Fifth Avenue mansion had 130 rooms and a 15-foot wide marble fireplace. Built between 1898 and 1910, the house was torn down when Clark died in 1925. The art collection in the mansion was donated to the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC upon Clark's death.
