Vermiculations & anastomoses (Black Snake Avenue, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, USA)

Click on the photo to zoom in.  Seen here are vermiculations on a cave ceiling in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky - the longest cave on Earth.  Vermiculations are relatively small, worm-like structures composed of fine-grained sediments that occur on some cave ceilings and walls.  These features are thought to form as films of water shrink by evaporation, leaving behind concentrations of material along irregular ridges (e.g., see Bojar et al., 2014).

The shadowed, sinuous grooves in the ceiling are anastomoses, formed by groundwater dissolution along former bedding planes or partings.
