Kelleys Island & Lake Erie (far-northern Ohio, USA)

Lake Erie is one of the five Great Lakes in North America. The other four are Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, and Lake Superior (= largest and deepest). All of them formed during the Pleistocene Ice Age as continental glaciers advanced from Canada to America. Each lake is elongated - the long axis represents ice flow direction. Lake Erie's long axis is oriented east-northeast to west-southwest. Before the Pleistocene, what is now Lake Erie was a topographic depression - the Erigan River Valley. The river flowed generally northeastward and drained into the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The low island in the photo is Kelleys Island, which consists of Middle Devonian bedrock. Several Kelleys Island quarries targeted the Columbus Limestone. World-class glacial grooves are present - some are preserved in Glacial Grooves State Park. Two American Indian petroglyph sites have been documented on Kelleys Island. The larger of the two is Inscription Rock. Petroglyphs are carved on the top of a large, glacially striated block of Columbus Limestone. Weathering and erosion has obscured the carvings. Fossil colonial corals are present on the top surface of the block. The second petroglyph site no longer exists. It consisted of carvings on a smaller rock reported to be quartzite or granite. Neither of these lithologies exist on Kelleys Island - the rock was transported here during the Pleistocene as a glacial erratic.
