Happy Wing Wednesday! We adopted 4 ex-battery hens in June 2022 but sadly 3 of them didn’t live for very long. Their immune systems aren’t really strong enough to deal with the weather & bacteria outside of a heated poultry unit. At least they got to experience grass & sunshine for a few months instead of only knowing the horrible battery cages.

Martin used to call our remaining hen Lonely. We can’t call her Lonely I said, that’s awful. So she's called Roy, after Roy Orbison’s song Only the Lonely www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6Aw3ZnqQrY

I was doing some clearing out in the polytunnel when Roy popped in to have a dust bathe & eat some of my lettuce leaves! She has moulted recently & is looking quite tatty while her new feathers grow. She follows me around the garden & even into the house if I let her. The dogs are frightened of her, it’s so funny. I’m reluctant to get more chickens as she would probably attack them or vice versa. She’s happy enough pottering around & still lays the occasional egg.
