War memorial

            In the centre of King Square in Bridgwater is a very moving and stunning war memorial sculpted in bronze by John Angel. It depicts a seated statue of a mother and her children and is intended to represent civilisation. In her hand she holds the World and in her lap the Book of Law. 
I sat in the dappled shade on a bench surrounded by trees, flowers, Regency architecture and a beautiful blue sky and felt extremely moved by the atmosphere and presence of this beautiful dark work of art...what a contrast to the memorial in Highbridge of the war time hero, Frank Foley...I must photograph it for you all to see what I mean. The sentiment is obviously the same but the execution is not great to say the least.
John Angel was born in Newton Abbot , Devon in 1881 and at the age of 19 was apprenticed to a woodcarver in Exeter and he attended the Exeter School of art and later the Lambeth School of art in London. In 1919, before he was thirty he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and this was when he began to take on some important commissions. In 1923 he competed the war memorial in Exeter that stands in Northernhay Gardens and this Bridgwater war memorial followed that. He later moved to U.S.A and carried on working there. He died in 1960.
