Is it time yet? Two-week-old, pin-feathery Baby Cockatiels are hungry!

Yesterday when I went to buy seed and nesting supplies for my Gouldian Finches I took my camera with me... just in case. And I'm so glad I did!

My bird man had lots of baby parrots and love birds... and he was happy to let me move in close to get this shot... and others. I'm a regular at his warehouse so he knows that I'm a bird lover.

He is hand feeding these babies so anybody who comes close looks like "the hand that feeds." Just beginning to get their first feathers, they aren't at their handsome-best yet. But give them a few months and they'll be in full-feather and brilliant color. Of course I'll go back to see them so I can show you!

The Cockatiel'a dominant color is gray. The wings and abdomen are darker. The head and crest are yellow, cheeks are orange-red. The great-wing coverts and the forward secondaries are white. The lower back, upper-tail coverts and middle-tail feathers are dark gray. The underside tail is black-gray. The bill and the part above the bill are gray. The iris is black-brown. Their feet are gray.

Their sex is distinguishable. The crest in the female is yellow-gray while in the male it is totally yellow. The cheeks in females are pale orange. Young males have more yellow color on the head than females of the same age. Cockatiels can be found in several mutations which are white, albino (without the pigment), beady, speckled, birds without features (they have only the combination of grey and white colors). These are most common.
