Protea... a fuzzy explosion of color and texture

Notice the white hairs that contrast with the ribbon like red, the golden buds that spring out on red filaments, and it's a large bloom... 4 or 5 inches around.

Protea includes about 100 species from South Africa. They are full of sweet nectar so referred to as "Sugar Bushes." Leaves are simple, strap-like and firm. Flowers are born in large, many-flowered heads.

Proteus was the sea god of Greek mythology who was able to change his form at will. Protea flower heads change appearance as they mature, unfolding like umbrellas.
