The last excitement of 2011

We planed a very muted New Year's Eve celebration, just en famille plus we invited a recently widowed old friend (with his carer).

They arrived a bit late and announced that they have a major concern as they managed to lock themselves out of the house with the only holder of a spare key being away in Australia.

Naturally, we instantly suggested that we have enough mattresses and they could stay the night as getting a locksmith on NYE did not seem a very practical solution. Our friend said he would not care where he spent the night the major problem was that his heart and diabetes medication was also in the house.

OK, lets not panic, I think I have a plan - I chimed.

I managed to persuade them to sit down and have dinner as originally planed. They agreed and I was pleased as they seemed to have enjoyed the meal.

Afterwards we piled in our respective cars and drove to his house from where I phoned the Fire Brigade. I explained the situation that we have an 89 y/o unwell man whose medication is locked in the house. It was a shot in the dark but, to their credit they sent a fire truck quite quickly with three jovial and well mannered Fireman. Given that an upstairs window was ajar they were in the house in less than 10 minutes.

Not only did they save our friend from worry, expense and who knows what else but, they made Marlon's day too. Right now, he is in the I want to be a Fireman phase. He requested and received a Firetruck on his birthday and a Fire Station for Christmas.

The lads were more than obliging and even told him that they have a vacancy. They offered him to sit in the cab but Marlon suddenly got shy and declined the offer. He'll be a Fire Chief one day said sweetly the team leader.

I took a bottle of bubbly with us and once inside the house we proceeded to welcome 2012, albeit an hour early on the excuse that it was already midnight in Hungary.

Back home, we managed to catch on TV the exceptionally extravagant riverside fireworks display.

By the time it was over - so was Marlon.

A New Year's Eve we will remember for some time.
