Xuanzang and the Big Goose Pagoda - a photo on Flickriver

            A bronze statue of the Buddhist monk and scholar Xuanzang (玄奘) stands in the plaza in front of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔).

Xuanzang was also a pilgrim and traveler.  Fictionalized tales of his journeys on the Silk Road and to India became the basis of one of China's most popular legends and novel: The Journey to the West (西遊記).  

The pagoda in the background was built to house the sutras (religious texts) and figurines of Gautama Buddha that Xuanzang had brought back to China from India.  

The pagoda was built in 652 during the Tang dynasty.  it was rebuilt in 704 and extensively repaired and renovated during the Ming dynasty after it was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1556.

The Journey to the West is a 16th Century Ming dynasty novel whose story remains wildly popular (in modernized form) in China and East Asia. It has kept Xuanzang a popular figure known to almost everyone.   

The legend of Zuanzang and his Journey to the West has also been the basis for numerous movies.
