The Big Goose Pagoda - a photo on Flickriver

            The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔) was built to house the sutras (religious texts) and figurines of Gautama Buddha that Buddhist monk and scholar Xuanzang (玄奘) brought to China from India.  It was constucted from earth, stone and bricks.

The pagoda was first built in 652 during the Tang dynasty; it was rebuilt in 704 by the famed Empress Wu Zetian.  The pagoda was heavily damaged by a major earthquake in 1556 during the Ming dynasty and was extensively repaired and renovated.  The last significant restoration to the pagoda was in 1964.  The surrounding plaza has been renovated in recent years to improve access because of the increasing number of visitors.

Xuanzang was also a pilgrim and traveler whose journeys on the Silk Road and to India became the basis of one of China's most popular legends and novel: The Journey to the West (西遊記). The story remains wildly popular (in modernized form) in China and East Asia. It has kept Xuanzang a popular figure known to almost everyone.
