The Eros of Lysippos - a photo on Flickriver

            This 2nd Century AD Roman marble is based on a 4th century BC Greek bronze original by Lysippos.  The original sculpture was a favorite of the ancient Romans and several copies of it exists.

Eros/Cupid, the Greek/Roman god of love, is depicted here as a winged adolescent with a bow.  The figure's stance is off-balance, but the statue seems perfectly in balance.   Despite the name, Eros does not appear to be stringing his bow, perhaps he is bending it, testing its flexibility.
