The Baldachin and St John the Evangelist

The top of the very Baroque Baldachin has figures four large angels at each of the corners, and putti/cherubs between them.

In the background, the medallion framing the mosaic portrait of St John the Evangelist by Giovanni De Vecchi. Four huge circular medallions house mosaic portraits (each about 8.5 metres ,or 28 feet ,in diameter) of each of the four Evangelists stand just below the dome at each corner of the transept surrounding the high altar at St Peters Basilica.
