The Golden Ceiling

            ...... over the Altar of the Chair, at the Main Tribune (or Apse) of the Basilica.

The elaborate golden vault ceiling in gilded stucco is by Vanvitelli. The three medallions here are: 'The Consignment of the Keys' (Centre), 'The Crucifixion of St. Peter' (Left) and 'The Beheading of St. Paul' (Right).

Directly below 'The Consignment of the Keys' are two Angels with the papal mitre and two keys. The inscriptions here include "PIVS XII" and "MCMLVII" in memory pf Pope Pius XII whose papacy began in 1957.
