Digital replacement (emulation) of colour infrared Ektachrome (EIR) film - Two-Image Method

Colour infrared films such as Kodak IE, EIR and Aerochrome (now discontinued) use the Infrared-Red-Green (IRG) colour-mapping scheme, instead of Red-Green-Blue (RGB) as in regular "colour" images. Hence, images created with IRG-mapped channels will have the look of EIR film or "EIR-Style". Digital IRG-mapped images may be created by combining two images, one in IR to supply the I-channel and one in colour to supply the R and G channels.

This is a not a "simulation' but a true reproduction of the spectral sensitivity and functionality of Infrared Ektachrome (EIR) film and thus may be used as a digital replacement for EIR film.

Method:

1. Acquire separate IR and normal colour (RGB) images of the same scene. The IR image should be "pure" IR 700 nm or higher. The images may be taken from a single unmodified or full-spectrum camera (with appropriate filtration for each image) or from two separate cameras sensitive to each spectral range. Synchronized images are the best, but sequential images may be used. Align the two images if necessary.

2. Split the colour image into separate R, G and B channel images.

3. Re-map the IR image to new R channel, R image to new G channel, G to new B channel. The original B image is not used.

4. Merge into new "IRG" image. Adjust colour / contrast / brightness to taste. SAVE image.
