Making Kuro-Tamago (Black Eggs), Ohwakudani

            Back in November 2012, I was traveling back from a visit to Hakone, Japan and took a mid-point break from the aerial tramway that takes you across the volcano, Mt Kanmurigatake, to visit the volcanic area and the Ohwakudana Nature Trail. This area has many hot springs from which the name ‘Ohwakudani’ (great boiling waters) derives its name. Aside from the natural beauty here, a certain amount of tourism-oriented industry exists. One of these is the production of Kuro-Tamago (Black Eggs) at a strategically-located hot spring along the return path to the tramway area. Here a gentleman enveloped in clouds of steam, was engaged in producing large numbers of the black eggs in the hot, sulphur-rich boiling waters. Eggs in baskets went in white and in scant minutes came out hard-boiled with black shells ready to sell to the crowd of tourists watching the process. - JW

Taken using a Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 18-105mm VR lense set to 35mm, ISO200, Auto WB, Aperture priority mode, f/8.0, 1/200 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from jpeg source file: scale image/set final size to be 9000px high, crop a bit off the bottom of the frame, slightly boost both contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, slightly increase vibrance, sharpen, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: make minor adjustments to the tone curve to very slightly darken the bottom 10% of the curve and slightly pull up the mid-point of the curve, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000 high (x4307 horiz), sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 1800 high for posting on-line, sharpen, save.
