Hepatica Nobilis - a photo on Flickriver

Hepatica Nobilis

            One of my annual looked-for signs of Spring is the appearance of the wildflower, Hepatica Nobilis, along the edges of the Niagara Escarpment’s  Bruce Trail sections between Grimsby and Vineland, Ontario. Given the persistent and nasty winter we have had this year, the Hepatica is appearing about 2-3 weeks later than usual and is all the more welcome for being late. This particular cluster shows the pink-tinged-white colour scheme. Others nearby varied from pure white to pale blue. This is one of the first wildflowers to appear rising from the dried-out, brown forest floor detritus and in the bright early Spring sunlight unfiltered by any forest canopy, stands out like beacons of light on the forest floor. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 (272E), ISO100, Auto WB, Aperture priority mode, f/5.6, 1/2000 sec with an EV -1.33 exposure bias to compensate for the dark background without blowing out flower highlights (determined by test exposure). PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000x6000, set exposure compensation to +0.19 stops brighter than as-shot, adjust Tone curve 1 to an ‘S’ curve to significantly brighten the top end (from about 2/3 of the way right) of the curve while darkening the bottom end (about to 1/3 of the way to the right) to get a good base representation of the desired image tonality, very slightly boost boost contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, enable Shadows/ highlights and very slightly boost highlight recovery and shadows, very slightly boost colour temperature (to approx 4700K, ie. slightly warmer than as-shot), very slightly boost vibrance (mostly impacts centre of the flowers), sharpen, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: modify the tone curve to brighten the mid-to-high-end of the curve and get the flowers to look as sunlit as they were against the dark forest floor detritus while still retaining highlight detail, slightly boost saturation to clean up colours, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000, sharpen, save, ad fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 1800 wide for posting online, sharpen slightly, save.
