Spider, Nara Temple Complex - a photo on Flickriver

            While touring one of the temples in Kyoto, Japan during the height of the fall colours on a trip back in Fall of 2012, I looked up and noticed a very colourful spider.  As luck would have it a vary ‘busy’ background provided a rather interesting out-of-focus backdrop for the spider and its web. A bit of Googling and I was able to identify it as a Nephila Clavata. The background is colourful as a result of the various foliage colours. The underbelly of the spider is shown here. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D5000 fitted wit a Nikkor 18-105mm VR lense set to 105mm, ISO200, Aperture priority mode, f/5.6, 1/30 sec with an EV+0.33 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon JPEG source file (was not using RAW/NEF files at this time ): set final image size to 9000x6000, set exposure compensation to EV-0.71, adjust contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, slightly increase vibrance, slightly increase black level, sharpen, save. PP in GIMP: use the levels tool to auto-correct the image resulting in expansion of the tonality to fill a fuller tonal range, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000, sharpen, save, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1024 wide for posting, sharpen slightly, save.
