In downtown Grimsby, Ontario there is an alley between the post office and a commercial building immediately to the West. The rear of the commercial building has, over the years, had a large extension added to the rear and somewhere along the line, its windows have been boarded up. More recently, red paint has been used to paint over everything that did not move. Cracks have formed in the stucco and lichens have formed on the window sill. Half-hearted repairs to the cracks seem to have been limited to simply adding a few dollops of paint to the cracks, so not a long term solution. I have walked past this for years but never really saw it until about a week ago, albeit in bad light. I resolved to come back when some sun was on the wall and get a shot for my rectangle series. The other day a brief period of sunlight provided that opportunity and this is the shot. Interestingly, while set up and shooting a few frames, a gentleman came up to me and asked what I saw that he could not. I had to explain. He walked off looking a bit puzzled, likely wondering about these strange people obsessed with cameras. And, of course, Red Rule applies in this monochrome red image. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with an AF-S DX Nikkor 12-24mm lense set to 17mm, ISO100, Auto WB, Aperture priority, f/8.0, 1/125 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image to 9000x6000px, correct perspective distortion (the shot was not taken directly perpendicular as the alley was not wide enough to get back far enough to do that so it ws shot off-axis resulting on some perspective distortion that created a non-square window), set exposure correction to EV-0.13 (slightly darker than as-shot), slightly boost black level, reduce Chromaticity in L-A-B mode (slightly), adjust colour temperature to slightly colder (bluer) than as-shot, very slightly increase vibrance, use the Channel Mixer tool to get the colour closer to what it actually is by reducing the green channels and slightly boosting the blue channel (I had a wider view reference shot that showed some sky and some colour-free/’white’ building trim as a reference, also, for single-colour-dominant images don’t use Auto-WB – I keep having to remind myself of this so maybe I will get it some day and meanwhile, thank goodness for shooting RAW), sharpen (edges only) save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: fine-tune the colour using the colour balance tool, sharpen slightly, save, scale image to 6000px wide, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
