Sandfall, Upper Antelope Canyon - a photo on Flickriver

            This is another image from a series captured during a trip to see the Upper Antelope Canyon just outside of Page Arizona back in 2017. The light and the wall formations created by the slurry of water and sand that periodically rips through this (and many other) slots, results in a surreal eroded geology. These formations are great photo subjects and are understandably very popular.  Although the Navajo guides that take you through the canyon create a standard small scale, and endlessly photographed sandfall, this is a natural one. Regardless of the heavy tourist load, they are well worth a visit. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a  hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 12-24mm 1:4.0 lense set to 24mm, ISO320 (Auto ISO), Daylight WB rather than Auto to prevent canyon wall colour from fooling the camera’s colour balance algorithm, Aperture priority mode, f/5.6, 1/80 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image to 9000x6000, slightly increase contrast in L-A-B mode, apply dynamic range compression, increase vibrance slightly, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the tone cure tool to brighten the highlight portion of the curve (upper 1/3) while holding the rest of the curve at default levels,  clone out a nasty little highlight near the upper left curve of the slot, use the dodge/burn tool to slightly darken a highlight area at the bottom left of the slot, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000, sharpen slightly, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048 wide for posting, sharpen slightly, save.
