Looking East, Gorge Of The Forty, Grimsby

            I got out last week to the Beamers Falls Conservation Area on the brow of the Niagara Escarpment above Grimsby, Ontario. At the lookout on the point, I was able to get a view looking East out to lake Ontario (upper left), St Catharines (the horizon smudge one-quarter of the way in from the left and under a brief rain shower) and the entire Niagara Escarpment in between. The combination of the Fall colours, clouds from a rainstorm that just missed the area and the last of the suns rays really brought out this fleeting view of the colours. The gorge in the foreground was carved through the Niagara Escarpment by the Forth Mile Creek, better known locally as simply The Forty. The entire gorge is a park/conservation area (and includes a trail running from downtown Grimsby to the top of the escarpment). This panorama was assembled from 6 portrait-orientation frames to capture the full view from this spot. - JW

Tech Details:

This panorama was made from 6 overlapping portrait-orientation frames each taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with an AF-S DX Nikkor 12-24mm lense set to 24mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Manual Mode (to ensure consistent exposure), f/7.1, 1/100 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: use exposure compensation to darken exposure slightly by EV-0.25, very slightly increase Vibrance, enable Shadows/Highlights and recover highlights and bring out the cloud detail along the left of the image and also bring out a bit more detail in the darker areas, sharpen (edges only), save, repeat for all 6 frames but also a bit more shadow recovery toward the right end frames since the gorge was darker in those frames. Use  free Open Source Hugin panorama software to combine the 6 frames and produce a TIFF file 15013x5500 px. PP in free Open Source GIMP: sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x2371px, sharpen slightly save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on bottom, save. Note, Image posted to Flickr was the full 6k wide image. Facebook posts were reduced to a width of 3k px.
