Dead Tree, Dying Leaves, Grimsby - a photo on Flickriver

A week-and-a-half back, I was out atop the edge of the Niagara Escarpment above Grimsby, Ontario with fellow Bando De Kvar member Paul (flickr.com/photos/41474913@N05 ), checking out the Fall colours while they were still around. As of today, that turns out to have been a good plan. Recent high winds and rains have pretty much tripped the trees of their Fall colours. As Paul and I checked out the various photographic opportunities, we were walking along the lip of the gorge of the Forty Mile Greek, carved into the Niagara Escarpment. Below us was a riot of colours and this dead tree. Now I realize that conventional landscape wisdom tells you to simplify the composition. But sometimes it just all about the chaos, as in this case. Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with an AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6 lense set to 105mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Aperture priority, f/7.1, 1/15 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to 9000px wide, adjust white balance by setting colour temperature to Daylight/5300K (somewhat warmer than as-shot), Use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND Tool rotated and shifted to cover the top right corner and bring its tonality into better balance with the rest of the frame, slightly boost contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, slightly increase vibrance, use the lense vignetting correction tool to add (NOT remove) a subtle bit of vignetting to the image, sharpen, edges only, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the levels tool to adjust the midpoint to slightly brighten the mid-tones and darken the darken tones, use the Hue-Saturation Brightness tool to tone down the red leaves a bit, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
