Snow-Covered Branches, The Forty - a photo on Flickriver

            After yesterday’s snowstorm dumped several centimetres of fluffy wet snow on the area along the South shore of Lake Ontario, Grimsby, Ontario received more than its share. I managed to get out promptly once it had stopped to try and capture some images before the snow dropped off the tree branches. This was taken from just atop the Niagara Escarpment on the East side of the Forty Mile Creek gorge at Beamers Falls. This looks more-or-less North. I focused on the branches and threw the other side of the gorge out-of-focus to help focus attention on the snow-covered branches. Given the very limited tonal range, this was a natural for a black-and-white/monochrome treatment.  - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4-5.6 lense set to 155mm, ISO100, Auto WB, Aperture priority, f/8.0, 1/40 sec with an EV+1.0 exposure bias (to bring out good detail in the branches). PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: the image final size was set to be 9000 px wide, image converted to black-and-white/monochrome, highlight recovery done on the ice and some shadow recovery done on the dark branches, sharpening of edges only and then saved. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the levels tool in Auto mode to get a good base tonal range and then use the contrast/brightness tool to reduce the contrast a bit and preserve some snow texture, sharpened and saved, scale image to 6000px wide, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
