Delivers More Parcels To Canadians Than Anyone

            Once again out for a daily constitutional during the current in an intensely bright and unseasonably warm afternoon, we found ourselves behind the Grimsby, Ontario post office. Generally, photographers recommend avoiding the harsh mid-day sun. But, as I have learned from some excellent street photographers, such light can also yield the most intense colour representation of certain subjects. As it turns out the bright red and blue on the vans used to deliver postal parcels stood out intensely against the white accents and deep shadows. A tight crop as well as use of the long end of the walk-about lense on my camera yielded this abstract. As for the title, it comes from the words printed on the rear doors of the vans. Keep safe but do get some exercise and shot what is in your neighbourhood.  - JW

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D800 fitted with an AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:4.0 lense set to 120mm, ISO100 (Auto ISO), Daylight WB, Shutter Priority Mode, f/8.0, 1/500 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file:  apply a little additional contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool rotated and shifted left to just cover and darken the rear door of the left-most van, slightly boost the black level to further darken the rear doors of the vans, use the shadows/highlights tool to significantly recover highlights, boost Vibrance, adjust white balance to slightly warm the overall image, sharpen, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: load the image as 2 layers and label the bottom image highlights and the top layer shadows, add a black layer mask to the top/shadow layer and then paint in the rear doors of each van using white paint and a soft-edged paint brush, use the tone curve tool to darken the rear doors further, on the highlights layer use the hue-saturation-brightness tool to boost the saturation of the red channel only and thus get rid of a stubborn magenta cast in the reds, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 2048 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
