Given the current heat wave here in Southern Ontario compounded by the ongoing concerns over travel in light of Covid-19, getting out to do landscape photography is proving a bit of a pain. But recalling cooler weather, I revisited some images from December 2017 taken at Kelson Beach. A couple of days prior to this image, we had received the first snowfall of the season. As sunset approached, I noted the broken clouds in the sky signaled the potential for some nice sunset cloud colour. I decided to head over to Kelson Beach/Fifty Point on the Western boundary of Grimsby, Ontario, immediately adjacent to the boundary with Winona (read Regional City of Hamilton) to see what might develop. As luck would have it the colourful clouds did not materialize as I had hoped due to a cloud bank low on the Western horizon. Only a hint of colour showed up. However, a snow squall was forming out over Lake Ontario so I did get a bit of cloud drama. That, combined with a bit of ice forming on the posts of the groynes made the trip worthwhile and now, in 2020 and the heat wave, remembering freezing my fingers to get the shots that evening helped a bit in maintaining a perspective on our current temperatures. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 12-24mm lense set to 12mm, ISO100, Auto WB, Aperture priority mode, f/7.1, 1/30 sec with an EV+0.33 exposure bias.. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image width to be 8000, level horizon, crop the image to (approx) 8000x4600px by getting rid of some blank snow off the bottom, increase contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, apply Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool to darken top of frame, use the shadows-highlights tool to recover the highlight areas as well as opening up the shadows a bit to get better detail in groynes (the posts), apply some noise reduction, sharpen, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the Hue-Saturation-Brightness tool to add a bit of saturation to the blues (specifically interested in the snow squall on the horizon), sharpen, save, scale image to (approx) 7000x4000, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to (approx) 3000px wide for posting, sharpen slightly, save.
