Virginia Creeper, Berries & Fall Colours

            Last week I headed out to roam some of the back roads in the Niagara area and try to get some Fall colour. On a whim I headed out on Concession 4 Rd West of Victoria Ave  (South of Vineland, Ontario) heading toward the remnants of the village of Silverdale. Along the way, I found a dead tree over which Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus Quinquefolia) had covered the remaining branches. Being late in the season, the leaves had turned their distinctive red Fall colour, and also being early enough, the clusters of blue, grape-like berries were hanging heavily on their red stems.  This is one of those clear indicators that summer is over. And, of course, Red Rule applies. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:4.0 lense set to 105mm, ISO100, Daylight WB , Matrix metering, Aperture Priority mode, f/11.0, 1/20 sec with an EV+1.0 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, slightly increase contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, slightly decrease Vibrance to tame the reds and prevent them from blowing out, use the Tone Curve Tool 2 in parametric mode to reduce the brightness of the highlights and lights, use the Shadows/Highlights tool to recover highlight detail in the top left branch and the background grass, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the Hue-Saturation-Brightness tool to slightly very slightly reduce the red-channel-only to bring tame the red in the leaves, sharpen, save, scale to 6000px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
