Z-Vent III Special Gas Vent - a photo on Flickriver

A couple of weeks ago I happened to come across a gentleman by the name of Dan Kozina working on a large wall mural/wall art installation in an alley in Downtown Beamsville, Ontario, beside a local bar, Sassafras. Dan is a tattoo and mural artist from Niagara Falls (www.facebook.com/DanKozinaTattoos/ ), hired by the local Downtown Improvement Association to brighten up this alley. After a fellow photographer, Paul Boudreau (www.flickr.com/photos/41474913@N05/50438784463/in/datepos... ) posted an image of the completed installation taken after dark with the alley lit up, I planned to return and see it again. So last night, I did. One of the things Paul does is create digital art in a way that I love but just can’t seem to crack myself. But I did spot this gas vent smack in the middle of Dan’s work and with a bit of judicious camera placement and in-camera cropping, I came up with a single-shot abstract that had a bit of a feel of Pauls work and a slightly warmish Renaissance colour pallette. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm 1:4.0 lense set to 28mm, ISO100, Auto WB, Matrix metering, Aperture Priority mode, f/10.0, 3 sec with an EV-0.67 exposure bias (to reduce risk of highlights blowing out). PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, apply Tone Mapping at default settings, increase contrast in L-A-B mode, use the Shadows/Highlights tool to recover highlights, boost Vibrance just a bit, shift colour balance a bit toward the blue end, (Note: NO sharpening or noise reduction). PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the curves tool to do a VERY slight adjustment to brighten the mid-tones and also darken the bottom 10% of the curve, sharpen slightly, save, scale to 6000px wide, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
