Red Tree, Gorge At Rockway Falls - a photo on Flickriver

A couple of weeks ago Fellow Bando-Kvar (www.flickr.com/groups/2472126@N24/ ) member, Matt (www.flickr.com/photos/taggartjm/ ) and I decided to head over to a conservation are in Rockway, just West of St Catharines, Ontario to try to get some Fall colour along the Niagara Escarpment. As we headed in on a side trail to the Bruce Trail (observing social distancing, in case you were wondering) I stopped to capture a shot of a lonely red-leafed tree down in the gorge just a short distance from Rockway Falls. The tree’s red colour stood out particularly well against the colour of the gorge wall, which, in the overcast conditions (augmented by leaving the camera White Balance at Daylight/Sunny instead of leaving the camera to correct of overcast conditions) came out with a distinct blue cast. As for the square format, the full frame had too much space left and right and the crop made it easier to get the focus on the tree and the colour contrast. And, Red Rule applies. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with a vintage AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4.0-5.6 lense set to 180mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Matrix metering, Aperture Priority mode, f/8.0, 1/6 sec with an EV-0.33 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 8000px wide and crop to square format (1x1 aspect ratio), increase lightness, contrast and Chromaticity L-A-B mode, slightly boost black level to darken the tree trunk, enable Shadows/Highlights and recover some highlight detail as well as some shadow detail, slightly boost Vibrance, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the tone curve tool to fine-tune the overall tonality, sharpen, save, scale to 6000px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
