This was taken three-and-one-half years ago at the West Niagara Fall Fair just South of Grimsby, Ontario. Most locals simply refer to it as the Grimsby Fall Fair. These annual events are a long-standing tradition in many rural agricultural areas and one of the things you can count on is vibrant, in-your-face colours. Most of that colour is man-made. However, in this case, the last rays of the setting sun managed to light up the upper sections of the grandstand (as well as some buildings) and bathe the spectators with an intense red glow. Demolition derbies are less common now than they used to be thanks to the insurance industry making coverage un-affordable and the insurance companies now insist on these fences which are simply unavoidable from any of the vantage points I was able to find. That said, the demo-derbies are lots of fun. After spending so much personal treasure, time and effort to keep one of these pieces of metal and plastic looking good enough to enhance our self-worth as well as social status, here is an opportunity to watch them being thoroughly abused, sometimes so much so that it is difficult to believe they can actually still run. Very therapeutic. Now that there seems to be some hope that vaccines will be able to get te current pandemic under control, I hope to be able to return to such events in the not-too distant future. - JW

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 (272E) lense, ISO1100 (Auto ISO), Auto WB, Matrix metering, Shutter priority mode, f/2.8, 1/250 sec with an EV+0.33 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image up to 8000 px wide and cropped to a 5x7 format to get rid of some dead space along the left, enable Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool and darken the sky to better balance its tonality with the foreground, use the Shadows/Highlights tool to significantly recover highlight details and also recover some shadow detail, increase contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, increase vibrance slightly, apply noise reduction, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: slightly increase overall contrast, did NOT sharpen, save, scale to 6000 px wide, sharpen very slightly, save, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 wide for posting, sharpen very slightly, save.
