While at a family function in ‘Northern’ Ontario a few days ago, we managed to get out for a bit of photo time. We headed out to Cobalt and along the road connecting Haileybury, North Cobalt, and finally, Cobalt Ontario along King Street, which sounds rather urban but in this area is actually a rural road connecting North Cobalt and Cobalt proper. In this particular spot, the road parallels the railway. Given the rocky terrain, the railway construction necessitated blasting to create a relatively level path for the tracks.Here, the exposed rock face is partly covered by greyish lichens while large areas are simply the orange(ish) exposed rock. Trees struggle to get a foothold here. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4.0-5.6 lense set to 135mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Aperture Priority Mode, f/7.1, 1/125 sec with an EV-0.33 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, brighten image overall by setting exposure compensation to EV+-0.95, boost Contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool to darken the overly bright bottom edge, set white balance by sampling a ‘white’ spot on one of the birch trees’ bark, boost Vibrance a little, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the levels tool’s Auto mode to get a bit of fine tuning of the overall colour balance, contrast and brightness,, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000 px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, sharpen very slightly, save.
