Recently, a few people have been posting images of the groynes at Kelson Beach in Grimsby, Ontario (also referred to as Fifty Point, but actually on the Eastern boundary of Fifty Point Park in Winona which is part of the regional City of Hamilton). The images I have seen show the groynes much as they appear in this image. But if you visit this spot today, the groynes have all but disappeared. This is an image I took 6 years ago and was one of a series taken but never processed for posting. Comparing then and now, the left groyne is mostly gone and the beach section is mostly sand-covered. The groyne on the right has only a few posts left. The destruction was caused by a sequence of heavy shore ice followed by a series of intense spring storms that tore them up. But back in January 2016 I felt ambitious and got up well before dawn, checked the weather forecast, dressed warmly, grabbed the gear, headed over to Kelson Beach and settled in on the beach awaiting dawn. I was not disappointed. A bonus was a large driftwood tree that had been beached in just the right position and orientation to be a useful foreground element in the composition. I wound up shooting with numb fingers, an occupational hazard if you want to get this type of image, I guess. The other interesting feature at this shoot was the frost that had formed on the sand. The result was a frosty outline on all the footprints of people who had visited this spot before me. The horizon shoreline at the right is Grimsby and above the town part of the Niagara Escarpment is visible. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 12-24mm lense set to 12mm, ISO100, Daylight WB, Aperture priority mode, f/7.1, 8 sec with an EV-1.0 exposure bias to help keep the bright horizon from getting blown out (based on test exposure). PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image to 9000 wide, level image, enable Tone Mapping at default levels, set exposure compensation to EV-0.35, enable Graduated Neutral Density filter and adjust/darken the sky to get a good balance between sky and foreground tonal values, enable highlight-shadow control and recover highlights to preserve bright horizon details and then slightly boost shadow recovery to just begin to bring out back-lit groyne details, boost Vibrance very slightly, slightly boost contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, apply a bit of noise reduction, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: very slightly increase contrast, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000 px wide, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale to 3000 wide for posting, sharpen slightly, save.
