Life Preserver, Port Dalhousie - a photo on Flickriver

            The Boss and I headed out for a visit to the renovated piers guarding the entrance to the Old Well and Canal in Port Dalhouse, Ontario (part of the Regional City of St Catharines) and take a walk out the light houses on that pier. The wind was up and ominous storm clouds were over Lake Ontario. At the North end of pier was one of several life preservers mounted on posts in case misfortune should strike. A bracing walk and a pleasant outing. - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D800 fitted with an AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm VR 1:4.0 lense set to 24mm, ISO100 (Auto ISO), Auto WB, Matrix metering, Shutter Priority Mode, f/7.1, 1/400 sec with an EV-0.33 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, level image, enable Tone Mapping at default levels, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool to darken the sky slightly, slightly increase Contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: slightly increase overall contrast, duplicate image to a new layer and on that layer use the Hue-Brightness-Saturation tool to boost the yellow channel only brightness to brighten the life ring post and then move that layer down below the previous layer and add a a white/opaque layer mask to the original layer an on that mask paint in the yellow parts of the post to reveal it from the brighter layer below, create new working layer from visible result, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000 px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online.
