Waiting - a photo on Flickriver

Waiting

            When you area waiting for in a hospital while a family member is undergoing a procedure, it gets real boring. Fast. I was sitting in a waiting area on the fourth floor of McMaster/Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) beside some windows overlooking an inner courtyard. Diagonally across from my seat, I could see someone else in another waiting area but the combination of what appears to be many years of grime and the loss of detail arising from shooting through at least four layers of glass compounded by the extreme angle made the whole shot look like a somewhat abstract image with a muted colour palette and a lack of identifiable faces that I found appealing. The reflections in the window show the brutalist architecture of the building, adding to the layers in the image. Not my usual cup of tea but this image stuck with me. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with an AF Nikkor 70-210mm 1:4.0-5.6 lense set to 210mm, ISO1000 (Auto ISO), Auto WB, Matrix metering, Shutter Priority Mode, f/5.6, 1/640 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, level image, apply some barrel distortion correction, apply Tone Mapping at default levels, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool rotated and shifted to cover the window area right of the right vertical frame piece and darken that area a bit to better match the tones of the rest of the image, increase Contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP:  sharpen, save, scale image to 6000 px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online.
