It is gooseberry season here in Grimsby, Ontario and that is good news (sort of) since The Boss makes a fabulous gooseberry-apple jam. I say ‘sort of’ because my contribution to the process is topping and tailing each individual berry, a tedious task at any time. As I was engaged in this activity I found I was liking the look of the berries in the bowl – great patterns and colours. But something was missing. I found a nice big, ripe strawberry and set it dead centre (as best as I could) to finish the composition. Can’t wait to taste the jam. - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with a Tamron 90mm 1:2.8 Macro, ISO100, Matrix metering, Auto WB, Aperture Priority exposure, f/16.0, 1/4 sec with an EV+1.0 exposure bias to compensate for the white. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, crop a little off the left side to get symmetry (keeping original aspect ratio), apply tone mapping at reduce strength, use the Shadows/Highlights tool to open up the shadows a little bit, slightly increase Contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, set colour balance by sampling off the white background, slightly increase Vibrance, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: load image twice, top layer for adjusting the white and bottom layer for adjusting berries, add a white/opaque layer mask to the top/white layer and on that mask paint in the berries area using a black/transparent paint on a large soft-edged (so the berries from the lower layer show through), use the Curves tool to brighten the whites layer a bit, on the berries layer slightly increase contrast and brightness and also use the Hue-Saturation-Brightness tool to brighten the red channel a bit as well as increase its saturation a bit, do some localized dodging and burning on berries on the beery layer, create new working layer from visible result, clone out some dirt/dust, sharpen slightly, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 6000 px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000px wide for posting online, sharpen slightly, save.
