Common sympetrum dragonfly - a photo on Flickriver

            Found at Low Barns Nature Reserve (run by the Durham Wildlife Trust), near Witton-le-Wear.

The common sympetrum is a 'darter' dragonfly. Sturdier-bodied than 'hawkers', darters are less restless movers, making only occasional darts at prey, intruders, or potential partners.
