Twice previously, I've tried infrared photography with a used, low-resolution DSLR bought pre-converted on eBay. My first camera, a Nikon D70s, had the stronger infrared filter of the two at 690nm, which was great for black-and-white infrared photography, but rarely gave good results when I was trying for that surreal, false-colour effect, so I sold the camera. The filter in its replacement, a Nikon D80, was a 590nm 'goldie', which is also good for black-and-white infrared, but is ideally suited to producing the distinctive and popular 'blue skies and golden yellow foliage' look... or should have been. Amazingly, I got worse false-colour photos out of that camera than I'd had from its predecessor, and my RAW files, which should have initially shown red skies and pale blue foliage before any post-processing, were opening in Adobe Lightroom in various shades of pink and purplish-grey. Most of the shots that came out of that camera could only be salvaged by converting them to black-and-white, and so, once again, the camera went the journey.

Just recently, I've been hankering after trying again, but was slightly reluctant to have my Nikon D5600 converted to 590nm in light of my previous failures. Then I discovered a couple of internet articles highlighting exactly the results I'd been 'achieving' as a particular problem that arises when attempting to process 590nm Nikon infrared RAW files in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop! Having settled on one of the various workarounds suggested, I revisited some of my old photos, and I'm now getting the results I would have managed in the first place if only I'd known what I was doing: DOH!
