Ciudad fronteriza entre Portugal y España situada junto al Río Miño, Valença do Minho destaca por las murallas y vestigios propios de una ciudad fortificada de los s. XVII-XVIII (al estilo del arquitecto francés Sébastien Le Pestre, Señor de Vauban), que forman el casco histórico hoy en día conocido como La Fortaleza, desde el que se puede divisar el puente fronterizo construido por Eiffel en 1885.
Su primer nombre fue "Contrasta", que significa población opuesta a otra, debido a su localización frente a la ciudad gallega de Tui en la otra orilla del Río Miño.
Hoy en día es una pequeña ciudad (3,500 habitantes) con un comercio floreciente, entre los que destacan, por encima de todos, los productos textiles. Es decir, las toallas que todos los que vivimos cerca de Portugal hemos ido a comprar alguna vez...
La fortificación conserva cuatro puertas: Santiago o del Sol, de Gaviana (arco gótico), de la Fuente de la Villa y de la Coronada, así como doce baluartes, construidos en diferentes épocas, formando el conjunto una planta en forma de corona.
Perfecto ejemplo de arquitectura militar gótica y barroca portuguesa (junto con las fortificaciones de Almeida y Elvas), en su día tuvo que defenderse de invasiones árabes y otras ofensivas, resultando un enclave de un alto valor estratégico por su ubicación fronteriza.
Actualmente las murallas se encuentran en muy buen estado así como las calles y edificios de su interior, ofreciendo un ir y venir constante de turistas, sobre todo españoles.

Perfect example of gothic and baroque military portuguese architecture (along with the fortifications of Almeida and Elvas), once had to defend against Arab invasions and other attacks, resulting an enclave of high strategic value for its border location.
Currently the walls and the streets and inside buildings are in very good condition, providing a constant coming and going of tourists, especially Spanish.
